We are a family law firm with offices in downtown Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach, and remote employees in Comox and Vancouver. We are a paperless, tech-savvy bunch that stays connected through Slack, Zoom, Microsoft 365, and our cloud-based client management software (though we love to get together in-person for some takeout). Our team is made up of smart, hilarious people who care about each other and love to rant and eat baked goods and make wise cracks and cheer each other on in both our professional and private lives. We enjoy flexible schedules that accommodate our work/life balance and parenting schedules, wearing comfortable pants, and most of all, helping to guide our clients through the tricky and usually stressful journey that is family law with an approach that is warm, compassionate, and competent.
Our ideal candidate is a consummate professional (meaning they take their job seriously, are honest and hardworking, and understand confidentiality), sharp as a tack, and eager to be a part of a great team.
Ideally, our new colleague will have at minimum one year of experience working in a law office, and better yet, a family law firm. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a legal assistant or office administration certificate. Experience using Clio, Divorcemate, Microsoft 365, and Adobe is considered an asset.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting two family law lawyers. This looks like: managing file loads and deadlines; drafting court documents; interacting with the court registry and scheduling; writing letters and emails; communicating with clients, opposing parties, and other firms; among other things; and
- Representing DAL. This looks like putting your best foot forward, being thoughtful, and understanding that this is a tough business and often the people we are helping are having one of a series of pretty bad days. We work and live in a small community and our reputation is important to us.
The position is full-time (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday) and in-person at our main office in downtown Nanaimo. The position is available immediately, but of course, we are willing to wait for the right person.
If you think you’re DAL’s next great legal assistant, please send your resume and a cover letter which showcases your personality and talents to Brendan Burns directly at billing@duncanallenlaw.com. We strongly encourage all candidates to explore our website prior to applying to get a feel for our vision and values. Compensation will depend on the experience you bring to the position, and includes three weeks of vacation per year, a health spending account, wellness incentive, and many Michael Scott references.
Please note, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. We will be interviewing on a rolling basis until we find the right person for our team.
